The Simple Habit That Strengthens Marriages

In a study of newlyweds by John Gottman, couples who stayed together for at least six years “turned towards” each other 86% of the time, while those who divorced did so only 33% of the time.

What does it mean to “turn towards” your spouse?

It means using every opportunity to show that you care. It means turning even the smallest interactions into moments of kindness, patience, gentleness, joy, and peace in your spouse’s life.

🔹 He says, “I’m so tired. I don’t feel like doing anything tonight.”
Instead of ignoring or brushing it off, you respond in a way that says, “I hear you. I care about how you feel.”

🔹 She asks, “Would you like to go on a walk?”
Even if you don’t feel like it, you say “no” in a way that reassures her: “I love spending time with you, but not right now.”

A simple smile can be a powerful way to “turn towards” your spouse.

Your challenge:

Tomorrow, be attentive and intentional about turning towards your spouse. Small moments make a big difference!

Blessings,
