Did you know that even people who make the most outrageous decisions genuinely believe they made the right choice?
I didn’t always realize this.
That’s why I used to explain myself over and over, thinking it would help.
I believed that if my wife understood I never intended to hurt her, she wouldn’t feel bad.
What I didn’t see was that my explanations made her feel like she was the problem.
So how do you deal with someone who’s always defensive?
They always have a good reason for their actions.
But instead of getting caught in a cycle of explanations and frustration, here are 3 things you can do:
- Acknowledge their reason – Validate their perspective before offering yours.
- Ask questions – Help them consider what they may not have noticed.
- Focus on expectations, not blame – Instead of pointing out what they did wrong, share what you had hoped for.
